​OMA Facilitator Training opportunity

Learn how to implement this intergenerational art program for people with dementia.
Fully In-Person Training in Oxford, OH

Training Contents:

  • Interactive instruction on the why, what, and how of implementing the award-winning, evidence-based Scripps OMA program.
  • Participate in an OMA activity with elders who have dementia and in art-making sessions
  • Conduct an OMA session and reflect on this leadership experience
  • Receive the OMA Handbook, guidelines for 20 OMA-tested art activities, and OMA evaluation tools

Training Location: The Knolls of Oxford Retirement Community on 6727 Contreras Road, Oxford, OH 45056. Tel. 513-524-7990

Training Schedule Day 1, 2-5 pm (registration at 1:30 pm)

  • Introductions, training overview and logistics
  • OMA evidence base
  • Dementia overview
  • Optional tour of OMA art studios

Day 2, 8 am – 5:00 pm

  • Introduction to OMA methodology, philosophy, and volunteer training program
  • Practicum #1: Observe OMA session and serve as an OMA volunteer, working 1-1 with residents who have dementia with reflection and feedback session
  • Overview of online resources available for volunteer training and idea sharing​

Day 3, 8 am – 6:00 pm

  • OMA activity design and evaluation
  • Practicum #2: Art-making sampler: Create 4 OMA projects
  • Attend OMA art show reception with OMA artists (residents with dementia)

Day 4, 8 am – 3:30 pm

  • Implementation logistics
  • Practicum #3: Conduct an OMA session on your own with reflection and feedback session
  • Curating art show
  • Closing ceremony and certificates

NCCAP CEUs Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University is an approved continuing education provider. Certificates with NCCAP approval number will be provided at the end of the training. NCCDP CEUs Miami University is a Certified Sponsor of professional continuing education with the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners and International Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners for members holding certifications as CDP, CDCM and CADDCT. CEUs can be earned by attending sessions at Miami’s Opening Minds Through Art Facilitator Training. Conference participants will be eligible to receive up to 20.5 CEUs for attending the full training.

Logistics Information for Training in Oxford, Ohio

We are delighted that you’ve elected to join us for our facilitator training. We’ve listed some relevant information below to assist you with your travel planning. Air Travel

The two most convenient airports are Cincinnati (CVG) and Dayton (DAY) airports, located about an hour from the training site in Oxford. Detailed travel information is noted below. Cincinnati CVG  www.cvgairport.com 2939 Terminal Dr, Hebron, KY 41048 (859) 767-3151 Dayton International Airport DAY www.daytonairport.com 3600 Terminal Dr, Dayton, OH 45377 (937) 454-8200 Both airports receive international flights. Dayton is 53 miles from the training site and CVG is 45 miles but can have heavier traffic depending on your arrival time as you’ll have to drive through Cincinnati. One airport may offer more economical flight options for you than the other so please check your specific flight path for the best available.

Ground Travel from Airport to Oxford

There are several available services that you may contact for transportation from the airport. Please contact the company of your choice directly to make transportation arrangements.

Lodging

A block of rooms is held at The Elms Hotel, theelmsoxford.comuntil one month prior to the start of the training date. Please call The Elms directly at 513-524- 2002 and mention “OMA Training” to make reservations. The Elms Hotel is located on 75 S. Main Street, Oxford, OH 45056. The Elms is located 2.2 miles from the practicum location. We’ve chosen this hotel because it is conveniently located in Uptown Oxford and in walking distance to many restaurants and shopping. Feel free to explore other options, like Airbnb.com.

Training Facility

The training session will be held at The Knolls of Oxford Retirement Community, just outside of town. The Knolls of Oxford is located at 6727 Contreras Rd, Oxford, OH 45056 ​

Meals

All breakfasts (8-9 am) and lunches (12-1 pm) will be offered at the training facility and is included in your registration fee. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions when you register and we will do our best to accommodate. Dinner will be on your own but attendees often form informal groups to dine together. There are a number of restaurants near the hotel and the front desk can provide recommendations upon request.

Dress

Dress is casual since we will be making art. Wear layers in case of over air conditioned room.
