3.1 Quiz: Leadership Roles

The first leader greets all participants individually, using their names, as they enter and leave the room.

The second leader leads the huddle because the second leader is responsible for the supply setup.

Only the first leader shows the inspiration pieces and asks the artists “Which one do you like better?”

At the end of the huddle, mat the example artwork created and elicit art talk from volunteers.

Both leaders serve supplies as needed, allowing individualized pacing, and clear tools/materials no longer needed along the way to minimize visual clutter.

During the art making period, both leaders need to be “invisible” to allow each pair to do the work without interruptions from the leaders.

Only the first leader is responsible for volunteer coaching.

Both leaders use a mat at the end to show the artists their finished work and share the artwork with others in the room (if they are not busy working). Comments from other participants are then reported back to the artist, using names, to build community and self-esteem.

It is important that first and second leaders switch roles as the semester unfolds.

When coaching volunteers, we need to place ourselves in between the elder and the volunteer, with our back to the elder so that the elder cannot see/hear our comments to the volunteer.
